Our Intertwining Tale, chapter three: Cassandra’s Fate
“My fate?” I point at myself before letting my arms rest at my sides. Nolan smiles a large grin with these words. He replies with a joking voice, “Actually, Cassie, yes.” He chuckles under his breath before continuing.
“Yes, Your fate. The prophecy states that the boy that will slay us will be related to an enemy; and a newcomer.” He pauses, his canine teeth showing underneath his lips. He was always intimidating. When he first met me when I was old enough to think for myself, I didn’t understand why. But I was a child, not even one year old at that time. “… A girl who was taken in by the villain himself. When I found you, you were small and fragile. Now that you are older and stronger, you may start your training. And we must start now, before your brother slays us. You are the-“
“My brother? I have a-” Before I can finish cutting him off, he cuts me off.
“Yes. Josiah Dunn. Unfortunately, I am not your father.” He sighs, presses his finger and thumb against the bridge of his nose. With his eyes closed, he looks fragile and weak. I wonder if his eyes are the most intimidating thing about him.
“How do I have a brother?” I ignore my thoughts for one second, wondering how I could have a brother that I don’t know about.
“Josiah was born several years ago in the mortal world by your human mother. You also have a second brother that was born several years after you. He is twenty-one.” Nolan pushes the chair from him, standing up, “But we shouldn’t worry about him. Josiah is the one you need to worry about.”
I smile at him. He has always helped me, ever since I was killed as a newborn baby. He couldn’t be lying to me right now. He has told me several times since I met him that we are the bad side. But I don’t care. In my eyes, he is my father.
And in my eyes, both sides are bad. We slay paranormal monsters and ghost hunters, although ghost hunters slay ghosts and paranormal monster hunters. We are the paranormal monster hunters. We both kill and create death, which means we are both on the bad side.
Nolan glances at me with his eyes, “What are you thinking about?”
I look back at him, but this time, he doesn’t look away. So I do, “I’m thinking about the good and the bad.” I take a look at the doors of Nolan’s headquarters. Aria is staring between a small slit in the door. I see her shadow move away, trying to pretend I didn’t see her.
“Ah, interesting isn’t it? Yin and yang kind of thing. We may be considered the villains, but we actually do good deeds for that stupid mortal world. Without ghosts, mortals can’t be moved into the heavens and the hells.” Nolan nods, crossing his arms. He seems to continue nodding. I wonder if he’s agreeing with his thoughts right now. Can he tell that Aria is staring at us?
Suddenly, the sharp edge of light that comes from the slit in the door disappears. Nolan walks up to me, his eyes staring into mine. I want to look away, but he hands out something in his palms.
